Our Approach
We evaluated 15 personal loan companies using a weighted scoring system designed to reflect what actually matters when you’re borrowing money. Each lender was assessed across six core categories, with scores calculated on a 5.0 scale for clear, side-by-side comparison.
Here’s how we weight each factor, and why it matters for your loan.
Rates & Fees (25%)
This category carries the most weight because borrowing cost is the single most important factor for most personal loan shoppers. A difference of even two percentage points on a $15,000 loan can mean hundreds or thousands of dollars in extra interest over the life of the loan.
We evaluate the full APR range (not just the advertised minimum), origination fee structure, late payment penalties, prepayment penalties, and available rate discounts such as autopay or direct-pay reductions. We benchmark every lender’s rates against the industry average APR of 12.27% (per TransUnion’s Q1 2025 data) to show where each offer falls relative to the broader market.
A lender offering a headline rate of 5.99% sounds attractive, but if it tacks on a 6% origination fee deducted from your loan proceeds, your effective cost is significantly higher. We account for these hidden costs so you can compare lenders on a true apples-to-apples basis.
Loan Terms & Flexibility (20%)
Measures how well the lender accommodates different borrowing needs. We look at minimum and maximum loan amounts, the range of available repayment terms, whether the lender offers co-borrower or co-signer options, secured loan alternatives, and the ability to change payment dates or defer payments during hardship.
A lender that only offers $5,000 to $35,000 with three-year or five-year terms isn’t going to work for someone who needs $2,000 for an emergency or $75,000 for a major renovation. We reward lenders that serve a wide range of borrowing situations and penalize those with narrow, one-size-fits-all offerings.
We also evaluate flexibility features like joint applications, rate-beat programs, and payment deferral options that can make a real difference if your financial situation changes after origination.
Eligibility & Accessibility (20%)
This category evaluates how easy it is for different types of borrowers to qualify and access the product. We assess the minimum credit score, income requirements, debt-to-income thresholds, state availability, and whether the lender serves thin-credit or non-traditional borrowers.
A lender available in all 50 states with a 580 minimum credit score and soft-pull prequalification is far more accessible than one that requires a 700+ score and only operates in 35 states. We also consider whether lenders use alternative data, such as education history or employment trajectory, which can open doors for borrowers with limited credit history.
Prequalification with a soft credit pull is a critical feature here. It lets you check your estimated rate without dinging your credit score, and lenders that skip this step lose points.
Speed & Application Process (15%)
Measures how quickly a borrower can go from application to cash in hand. We evaluate the prequalification process, application completion time, time to approval decision, and time to funding. We also consider whether the process is fully digital or requires branch visits or extensive document uploads.
For many borrowers, speed is critical. If you’re consolidating credit card debt to stop interest from compounding, every extra day waiting for funds costs real money. We track whether lenders offer same-day or next-day funding and flag any conditions that can delay disbursement, such as verification holds, bank holidays, or loan amount thresholds.
We also assess the overall application experience: how many steps are involved, whether the process can be completed on a mobile device, and how clearly the lender communicates estimated rates and terms before you commit.
Customer Experience (10%)
Assesses the quality of the borrower experience after origination. Primary data sources include J.D. Power’s U.S. Consumer Lending Satisfaction Study, CFPB complaint volume relative to loan portfolio size, mobile app ratings, and the availability of customer service channels including phone, chat, email, and branch support.
We pay particular attention to patterns in feedback: consistent praise for smooth repayment experiences carries weight, as do recurring complaints about billing errors, difficulty reaching support, or poor communication during hardship situations. A lender with a sleek application process that falls apart once you’re a customer loses points here.
J.D. Power’s consumer lending studies provide additional benchmarking against industry standards for borrower satisfaction, and CFPB complaint data helps us identify lenders with disproportionately high complaint volumes relative to their market share.
Transparency & Reputation (10%)
Evaluates the lender’s clarity in disclosing terms and fees, its standing with consumer protection organizations, and its overall market reputation. We check BBB ratings and accreditation, Trustpilot reviews, the clarity of rate and fee disclosures on the lender’s website, and the company’s financial stability and regulatory history.
For banks, we review regulatory standing, FDIC-insured status, and total assets. For fintechs, we assess funding sources, revenue trajectory, profitability status, and key banking partnerships. A lender with an A+ BBB rating, clear fee disclosure, and a clean regulatory record scores well here; one with vague disclosures, unresolved complaints, or recent enforcement actions does not.
Transparency also means being upfront about what a loan will cost. If we have to dig through fine print or call a support line to find the origination fee, that’s a problem, and we reflect it in the score.
