Additionally, we review NAIC complaint index data to see how each insurer’s complaint volume compares to the industry median—a key indicator of whether financial strength translates into reliable customer experiences.
Customer Service (20%)
When you’re stranded on the roadside or navigating the aftermath of an accident, responsive and knowledgeable customer service isn’t a luxury—it’s essential. We evaluate this across three dimensions.
For phone support, we assess availability hours, average wait times, and quality of service. For digital support, we examine mobile app ratings on both iOS and Android, website usability, online account management features, chat support availability, and email response times. We also incorporate third-party ratings including BBB accreditation and grade, Trustpilot scores, J.D. Power ratings where available, and sentiment analysis from communities like r/insurance and r/personalfinance on Reddit. These independent sources help paint a complete picture of what policyholders actually experience.
Customer Satisfaction & Reputation (20%)
Past customer experiences offer valuable insight into what you can expect. We analyze verified customer reviews, BBB complaint volumes over the past three years, and industry reputation among insurance professionals.

The goal isn’t finding the cheapest policy—it’s identifying companies that offer genuine value through competitive pricing paired with comprehensive coverage and meaningful discount opportunities.
Claims Process (15%)
The true test of any insurance company is how they handle claims. We evaluate the clarity of claims procedures, average settlement times, claim denial rates where data is available, and customer reviews specifically focused on claims experiences.
We also consider whether companies offer convenient digital claims submission, direct repair programs, and transparent communication throughout the process. A company that makes filing a claim difficult or drags out settlements loses points here, regardless of how polished their sales experience might be.
Application & Digital Experience (10%)
Today’s drivers expect to research, purchase, and manage their insurance digitally. We assess website usability, mobile app functionality, online binding availability, and how easy it is to get an accurate quote and understand what you’re buying.
We also evaluate digital tools like coverage calculators and comparison features that help consumers make informed decisions. While this carries less weight than factors like financial strength or claims handling, a poor digital experience can signal broader operational issues—and creates unnecessary friction when you’re trying to access ID cards or policy documents on the go.
