Travel Insured International Travel Insurance

Best for Customizable Coverage
Editor's Rating
8.1
Good for Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Travel Insured International is an excellent choice for travelers who prioritize financial stability and comprehensive medical protection. The company's parent, Fairfax Financial Holding, maintains a consistent A (Excellent) rating from AM Best, signifying robust financial backing and a strong ability to pay out claims. The insurance coverage is underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, offering a double layer of financial security. For a product that has stood for over 30 years and is part of a larger corporate family managing billions in assets, you gain peace of mind knowing the company has the financial muscle to meet its ongoing obligations.

Furthermore, the product's medical and evacuation coverage limits are among the highest in the industry, making it ideal for international trips or remote destinations. The premium Worldwide Trip Protector Platinum plan offers up to $500,000 for emergency medical issues and up to a remarkable $1 million for emergency evacuation and repatriation. Crucially, the medical coverage on both the Deluxe and Platinum plans is primary, meaning you can file a claim directly with Travel Insured International without the hassle of navigating your primary health insurance first. This level of protection and streamlined process for serious medical issues provides genuine value.

Finally, Travel Insured International offers unparalleled flexibility through its three-tier plan structure (Essential, Deluxe, Platinum) and extensive add-on bundles. This à la carte approach allows you to tailor your policy exactly to your needs, whether that means adding Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage, a Pet Bundle for pet-related expenses, or an upgrade for extreme sports medical protection. This customization ensures you are not paying for unnecessary coverage and can build a comprehensive policy that is a perfect fit for your unique trip, including strong options for pre-existing conditions when purchased within the required timeframe.

Travel Insured Company Overview

Travel Insured International has been in the travel insurance game since 1994, when founder Peter Gehris established the company in Glastonbury, Connecticut. What started as a spinoff from the original Travelers insurance company has grown into a respected player in the travel insurance space.

The company operates with around 150-170 employees and was acquired by Crum & Forster in 2015, which itself is a subsidiary of Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. This corporate structure matters because it provides Travel Insured International with significant financial backing. The insurance coverage is underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, based in Morristown, New Jersey.

Travel Insured International is available to residents in all U.S. states, though there’s a catch. The company rolled out new plan options in December 2024, and residents of Montana, New York, and Washington can’t purchase these newer plans (they can still access the older product lineup). The company holds appropriate state licenses, including California license number 0I13223.

This is where Travel Insured International really shines. The parent company, Fairfax Financial Holding, consistently maintains an A (Excellent) rating from AM Best, which is a big deal in the insurance world. AM Best is the gold standard for rating insurance companies’ financial health, and an A rating falls comfortably into the “Excellent” category.

What does this mean for you? Simply put, the company has the financial muscle to pay out claims when things go south. They’ve been around for over 30 years and have weathered various economic storms while maintaining stability. The underwriter, United States Fire Insurance Company, also has strong ratings, providing you with a double layer of financial security.

The company has demonstrated claims-paying ability over decades, and being part of the larger Crum & Forster family (which manages billions in assets) means they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. For context, an A rating from AM Best indicates the company has a strong ability to meet its ongoing insurance obligations.

Travel Insured Coverage Options

Plan Types Available

Travel Insured International revamped its entire product suite in December 2024, introducing three distinct single-trip plans: Essential, Deluxe, and Platinum. Let me break down what each one offers.

Worldwide Trip Protector Essential is the entry-level option. This plan provides basic coverage across key categories, including trip cancellation, trip interruption, flight delays, lost or damaged baggage, missed connections, emergency medical incidents, and emergency evacuation and repatriation. The Essential plan includes $50,000 in emergency medical coverage and $200,000 for medical evacuation. It’s a solid choice if you’re on a tighter budget and just want the fundamentals covered.

Worldwide Trip Protector Deluxe sits in the middle. This plan offers higher coverage limits and allows adding cancel for any reason (CFAR) and interrupt for any reason (IFAR) coverage. Medical coverage bumps up to $250,000 with no deductible, and evacuation coverage increases to $500,000. The Deluxe plan also offers an optional Trip Delay Upgrade for an additional cost, which increases the maximum benefit amount.

Worldwide Trip Protector Platinum is the premium option. This plan provides the most robust coverage available, with up to $500,000 for emergency medical issues, up to $1 million for emergency evacuation and repatriation, up to $750 for baggage delays, and up to $150,000 for political/security or natural disaster evacuation. The Platinum plan is the only one that allows for additional extreme sports medical upgrade protection.

Travel Insured International also offers one annual policy called the Annual Multi-Trip Protector plan, which makes sense for frequent travelers who take multiple trips throughout the year.

All plans include standard travel insurance staples like trip cancellation and interruption, medical coverage, emergency evacuation, baggage protection, and travel delays. The medical coverage across all plans is primary, meaning you don’t have to go through your regular health insurance first before filing a claim with Travel Insured International. That’s a nice perk that saves time and hassle.

Coverage Limits & Flexibility

One of the standout features of Travel Insured International is the extensive customization available. The company takes an à la carte approach, allowing you to add various bundles to your base plan.

Optional bundles include: Cancel for Any Reason/Interrupt for Any Reason (CFAR/IFAR) coverage that reimburses up to 75% of trip costs; a Baggage Bundle (Platinum only) that increases coverage from $2,500 to $5,000; Flight Bundle with change fee coverage and travel inconvenience benefits; Rental Car Damage and Theft coverage; Pet Bundle for pet-related expenses; Cruise Bundle with additional covered reasons and increased baggage delay benefits; and various other specialized options.

The pre-existing condition waiver is available across all plans, but timing matters. The Platinum plan must be purchased within 21 days of your initial trip deposit, while the Deluxe and Essential plans must be purchased within 14 days. This is standard in the industry, so if you have any existing medical conditions, don’t sleep on buying your policy.

Like all travel insurance, there are exclusions. Standard exclusions include dangerous activities (unless specifically added), anything done while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. These known storms already have names, acts of war, and intentional self-harm.

Travel Insured Affordability

Let’s talk money. A sample trip for a 36-year-old traveler from Indiana to Canada for five days found that the cheapest Travel Insured International plan cost $164, while the premium Platinum plan was $218.

Travel insurance typically runs between 4% and 10% of your total trip cost, and Travel Insured International sits right in that range, though it tends toward the higher end. Based on industry benchmarks and comparison data, their pricing is about 10-15% above the industry average for similar coverage levels.

Here’s the thing, though: you’re paying for flexibility and robust medical coverage. The medical coverage limits on the Deluxe and Platinum plans are genuinely impressive, among the highest in the industry. If you’re traveling internationally and want serious medical protection, that premium might be worth it.

The value proposition really depends on what you’re adding to your plan. If you stack on multiple bundles (CFAR, pet coverage, cruise protection, etc.), the price can climb quickly. But if you stick with a base plan, the pricing is competitive given the quality of coverage and the company’s financial strength.

There aren’t really discounts available in the traditional sense, though if you’re purchasing through USAA or certain travel agencies, you might find partnership pricing that knocks a few dollars off.

Travel Insured Customer Service

Travel Insured International’s main customer service line (800-243-3174 or 855-752-8303) operates Monday through Friday from 8 am to 7 pm Eastern Time, and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm Eastern Time, with no service on Sundays. That’s… not great for a travel insurance company. If something goes wrong on a Sunday (and let’s be real, that’s when things love to go wrong), you’re out of luck for non-emergency issues.

The good news: every Travel Insured plan includes access to 24/7 traveler support services for emergencies. You can reach emergency assistance at 800-494-9907 within the U.S. and Canada, or at 1-603-328-1707 from abroad.

From the review data, wait times are reasonable during business hours, though some customers reported difficulty reaching someone during peak travel seasons.

Support Channels

You can reach Travel Insured International through:

  • Phone (both regular customer service and 24/7 emergency line)
  • Email ([email protected])
  • Live chat through their website
  • Online support portal

The company also provides 24/7 non-insurance travel assistance through its partner, C&F Services, including medical referrals, lost baggage retrieval, prescription drug replacement, passport replacement, and concierge services.

Customer Service Quality

This is where reviews get mixed. Customers appreciate Travel Insured International’s helpful, responsive customer service, and many have positive claims experiences, though some report challenges meeting the provider’s documentation requirements.

The company receives a 4.3 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot and a 4.4 out of 5 rating on Squaremouth, with travelers saying the representatives are polite and helpful. When things go smoothly, people genuinely appreciate the service.

However, there’s a pattern in negative reviews. Some customers found that the claims representative made inappropriate comments about expenses and that the claims process was cumbersome, with excessive requests for irrelevant information. This suggests consistency issues where your experience might depend on which representative you get.

Travel Insured Online & Digital Experience

The Travel Insured International website is functional and relatively straightforward. The quote process is pretty standard: you enter your trip details, select coverage levels, and review your options. The interface is clean enough, though it’s not winning any design awards.

One thing I appreciate is that the site provides clear plan comparison charts, making it easier to see differences between the Essential, Deluxe, and Platinum tiers. The purchase flow is secure and free of major hiccups. You can also manage your policy through an online portal, where you can view documents, make changes to your trip details, and track claims.

Mobile App

Here’s where things get rough. Travel Insured International’s mobile app was unpublished from the Apple App Store in February 2024. It had been rated just 1.47 out of 5 stars based on 140 ratings, with the last update occurring in April 2023.

So right now? There’s no mobile app. This is genuinely disappointing in 2025 when most competitors offer robust mobile apps for managing policies, filing claims, and accessing emergency assistance while traveling. You’ll need to rely on the mobile website, which is functional but not nearly as convenient as a dedicated app.

Digital Tools

On the positive side, the company offers digital claim submission, allowing you to snap pictures of receipts and documentation and send them directly through the online portal. You can also access and download policy documents digitally, and the claims portal allows you to track your claim status in real time.

The lack of a mobile app means you can’t access your documents offline (unless you manually download PDFs before your trip), which is a major inconvenience if you’re traveling internationally and dealing with spotty internet.

Travel Insured Customer Satisfaction

Here’s what policyholders are saying about Travel Insured Travel Insurance.

Better Business Bureau (BBB)

Travel Insured International holds an A+ rating from the BBB and has been accredited since February 2006. The company has an average customer review rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars based on 224 reviews.

An analysis of BBB complaints reveals a pattern. Common complaint themes include delays in claim processing (sometimes 7+ weeks), requests for documentation that was already provided, and denials based on policy technicalities. However, many complaints show the company does respond and attempt to resolve issues, even if the resolution doesn’t always satisfy the customer.

Trustpilot

On Trustpilot, Travel Insured International has a rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars with over 1,700 reviews. The reviews skew positive, with many customers praising the peace of mind the insurance provided, even if they didn’t need to file a claim.

Positive reviewers frequently mention helpful customer service representatives, straightforward claims processes, and timely reimbursements. Several reviews specifically call out representatives by name who went above and beyond.

Negative reviews often cite dismissive handling of claims, difficulties with the claims process, and denials on technicalities. There’s a recurring theme among customers: the company seems to look for reasons to deny rather than pay claims.

Reddit & Social Media Sentiment

Reddit discussions about Travel Insured International are limited but generally echo the patterns seen elsewhere. Some users report positive experiences with straightforward claims, while others warn about documentation requirements and processing delays. The company doesn’t have a strong presence on social media, and when it does come up on travel forums, the sentiment is decidedly mixed.

Industry Awards & Recognition

Travel Insured International has received recognition, including the TravelAge West 2023 Editor’s Pick Award for Best Travel Advisor Support and Highest Client Satisfaction. The company has also been nominated for various industry awards in customer satisfaction categories.

Travel Insured Claims Process

Filing a claim with Travel Insured International is straightforward in theory. You can file claims online through their claims portal, where you enter your travel and incident details, upload supporting documentation like receipts and medical records, and track your claim’s progress.

The reality is more complicated. While many travelers report that filling out forms to submit a claim is simple and that they didn’t have to wait too long for reimbursement, there are significant complaints about the process.

A common complaint is that the company requires excessive documentation for claims. Customers report being asked for the same documents multiple times, or receiving requests for additional information weeks into the process. Some claims take 7+ weeks to process, with customers reporting delays and requests for documentation that had already been submitted.

One positive review mentioned receiving reimbursement within 3 weeks of submission and praised the staff for making repeated attempts to work with foreign billing departments. However, another reviewer noted that it had been over 4 weeks since filing and still hadn’t received a response on claim approval.

The company doesn’t publish average claims processing times, which is concerning. The lack of transparency here makes it hard to set realistic expectations.

Payment methods appear to be primarily via check, though electronic payment options may be available depending on the situation. The claims approval rate isn’t publicly available either, which is frustrating when you’re trying to evaluate the likelihood your claim will be paid.

Unique Features of Travel Insured

What sets Travel Insured International apart from competitors?

Three-tier customization system: The Essential, Deluxe, and Platinum structures, with add-on bundles, give you genuine control over what you’re paying for. This a la carte approach means you’re not stuck with one-size-fits-all coverage.

Exceptional medical coverage limits: The Platinum plan’s $500,000 medical coverage and $1 million evacuation coverage are among the highest in the industry. If you’re traveling to remote areas or have health concerns, this is serious protection.

Primary medical coverage: Unlike many competitors that offer secondary coverage (meaning you have to go through your primary insurance first), Travel Insured International provides primary coverage on Deluxe and Platinum plans. This simplifies the claims process significantly.

Pet coverage bundle: The optional Pet Bundle helps cover pet-related travel expenses such as kennel fees and veterinary costs. This is genuinely useful if you’re boarding your furry friends while you travel.

Partnership with Robin Assist: The 24/7 assistance services through Robin Assist and Blue Ribbon Bags (for baggage tracking) provide additional support beyond just insurance coverage.

Our Verdict & Overall Score for Travel Insured

Travel Insured International is best suited for travelers who prioritize robust medical coverage and want extensive customization options, particularly those planning international trips to remote destinations or with pre-existing medical conditions.

Choose Travel Insured International if you:

  • Want exceptional medical evacuation coverage (up to $1 million)
  • Need primary medical coverage rather than secondary
  • Value the ability to customize your plan with specific bundles
  • Are you traveling internationally and want comprehensive medical protection
  • Have pre-existing conditions and can purchase within the required timeframe
  • Don’t mind paying slightly above average for higher coverage limits
  • Are patient and organized with documentation for potential claims

Look elsewhere if you:

  • Want a mobile app for easy policy management while traveling
  • Need 24/7 non-emergency customer service availability
  • Are you looking for the most budget-friendly option
  • Value fast, streamlined claims processing
  • Live in Montana, New York, or Washington, and want access to the newest plans
  • Prefer a company with more consistent claims experiences

The bottom line: Travel Insured International is a solid choice with strong financial backing and genuinely impressive medical coverage limits. The customization options are authentic and meaningful, not just marketing fluff. However, the claims process concerns and the lack of a mobile app in 2025 are legitimate drawbacks. If you’re the type who keeps meticulous records and doesn’t mind a potentially slower claims process, the comprehensive coverage might make the tradeoffs worthwhile. For those who want simplicity and speed above all else, you might find better options elsewhere.
