Over the past 27 years, they’ve expanded into comprehensive travel insurance for tourists, business travelers, missionaries, and anyone who needs coverage while globetrotting.

In April 2025, the company relocated its headquarters from Fairhope, Alabama, to Miami, Florida, positioning itself as a more internationally connected player in the travel insurance game. The move to Miami represents a strategic shift toward serving a more global customer base, which makes sense given that Miami is basically the unofficial gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Trawick operates nationwide and offers international travel coverage. The company has won the ITIJ Award for International Travel & Health Insurer of the Year. However, customer reviews suggest there’s a significant gap between industry recognition and actual customer experience.

The company employs between 11 and 50 people and operates as a privately held business. They’re licensed by the Alabama Department of Insurance and maintain multiple state licenses to sell insurance across the country.

Trawick Financial Strength & Solvency

Here’s where Trawick actually shines. Their policies are underwritten by two solid companies: Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A+ rating from AM Best) and Starr Indemnity & Liability Company (A rating from AM Best). For context, A++ is the highest possible rating, so these underwriters are in excellent financial shape.

This matters because it means when (if) you actually get through the claims process, there’s money to pay you. The financial backing is legit, which is reassuring when you’re dealing with a company that has mixed reviews in other areas. Nationwide has been around for over 90 years and is one of the country’s largest insurers, so they’re not going anywhere.

The claims-paying ability is strong based on the underwriter ratings. The main issue isn’t whether they can pay claims but rather how long it takes them to actually process and pay out those claims (spoiler alert: way too long).

Trawick Coverage Options

Trawick offers a pretty extensive menu of coverage options, which is actually one of their strengths. Their main product line is the “Safe Travels” series, which includes plans ranging from budget-friendly to premium coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption: All their comprehensive plans include coverage for trip cancellation due to covered reasons like illness, death of a family member, severe weather, or travel supplier bankruptcy. Trip interruption coverage kicks in if you have to cut your trip short for similar reasons.

Medical Coverage: Emergency medical coverage ranges from $50,000 to $250,000, depending on the plan you choose. Their Voyager plan, which is their most popular option, offers $250,000 in medical coverage. Some plans provide primary coverage (pays first before your regular insurance) while others are secondary.

Emergency Evacuation: This is where Trawick really competes well. Medical evacuation coverage on their higher-tier plans reaches $1,000,000, which is genuinely impressive and higher than many competitors’.

Baggage Loss and Delay: Standard baggage coverage is included across their plans, though the limits vary. Baggage delay coverage typically kicks in after 12-24 hours, depending on the plan.

Travel Delay: Coverage for travel delays is included, though you’ll need to read the fine print to see what qualifies and how long the delay must be.

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR): CFAR coverage is available as an optional add-on for their Voyager and First Class plans. This gives you 75% reimbursement of prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for literally any reason. However, this option has received mixed reviews, with some customers finding the terms confusing or misleading.

Pre-existing Condition Coverage: To be eligible, you usually need to purchase your plan within 14 to 21 days of your initial trip payment and meet the standard enrollment criteria. Once you’re covered, COVID-19-related medical costs are treated just like any other illness under the plan.

Adventure Sports Coverage: Some plans offer coverage for adventure activities, though you may need to add this as an optional upgrade. Don’t assume your bungee jumping accident is covered without checking.

One nice feature is the 10-day free look period. You can review your policy after purchase and cancel for a full refund within 10 days if you haven’t started your trip or filed a claim. This is helpful if you want to understand what you bought.

Trawick’s pricing is genuinely competitive, which is their most significant selling point. Based on sample quotes, a 34-year-old traveling from the US to Denmark for two weeks with a $4,500 trip cost would see prices ranging from about $100 for basic coverage to around $250 for their most comprehensive plans.

This pricing is competitive with the industry average range of $10-$202 for similar sample trips. For travelers on a budget, Trawick often comes in at the lower end of the pricing spectrum while still offering decent coverage amounts.

Plans typically cost between $1 and $10 per day, which is affordable considering what you’re getting. However, the value proposition becomes more complicated when you factor in claims experience. Sure, you’re saving money upfront, but if you actually need to use the insurance, you might spend hours (or months) dealing with their claims process.

There don’t appear to be significant discounts available beyond the standard pricing structure. The company doesn’t heavily advertise promotional codes or loyalty discounts.

Price transparency is decent. You can get quotes online relatively easily, and the website shows you what’s included in each plan. However, some customers have reported confusion about what’s actually covered when it comes time to file a claim.

Trawick Customer Service

This is where things get rough, and I need to be honest with you.

Trawick offers 24/7 customer service through multiple channels, including phone, email, live chat, text, and even WhatsApp. On paper, this sounds amazing. In practice, the experience varies wildly.

The company lists a toll-free number (888-301-9289) and maintains a multi-channel support system. However, average wait times aren’t publicly disclosed, and customer reviews suggest that while getting someone on the phone initially isn’t too difficult, getting meaningful help (especially during the claims process) is a different story entirely.

Support Channels

Pre-purchase and general inquiries get handled reasonably well. Multiple reviewers mentioned that the agents who help you buy a policy are knowledgeable, friendly, and responsive. It’s after you’ve purchased the policy and actually need to file a claim that things deteriorate rapidly.

Trawick offers a live chat option on its website, and its app includes one-touch customer service options. Social media responsiveness wasn’t extensively documented in my research.

Customer Service Quality

Here’s where I need to give it to you straight. The customer service quality is a tale of two experiences: buying a policy versus filing a claim.

Buying a policy: Generally positive. Agents are described as helpful, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. The process is straightforward.

Filing a claim: This is where everything falls apart. Trawick outsources its claims processing to a third-party company called SureGo (also known as MySureGo). Multiple customers reported that when they contacted Trawick about their claims, they were told to work with SureGo, and that Trawick doesn’t take responsibility for SureGo’s handling of claims.

Customers report that SureGo requests excessive and redundant documentation, asks for the same information multiple times, and takes months to process even simple claims. Getting a supervisor on the phone seems nearly impossible. Communication is described as horrible, with customers left dangling for months without status updates.

This outsourcing model creates a frustrating finger-pointing situation: Trawick says it’s SureGo’s responsibility, but you, as the customer, bought your policy from Trawick and expect them to stand behind it.

Trawick Online & Digital Experience

The Trawick International website is functional and relatively easy to navigate. Getting a quote is straightforward. You enter your trip details (destination, dates, trip cost, ages of travelers), and the system shows you available plans with pricing.

The quote process is straightforward enough, though comparing plans side-by-side requires some clicking around. Policy documents and coverage details are accessible once you dig into each plan. The purchase flow is standard. You can buy a policy online without talking to an agent, which is convenient.

Policy management features exist. You can view your policy documents online through their MyAccount portal, and there’s information about how to extend, cancel, or correct your policy through this system.

Mobile App

Trawick offers a free mobile app available for both iOS and Android. The app allows you to access policy details, contact customer support with one touch, search for medical providers, and includes a unique LutiKey tracking feature (which works with a separate physical device for tracking luggage or personal items).

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find current ratings in Apple’s App Store or Google Play. The app exists and has features, but without ratings data, it’s hard to assess how well it actually works in practice. The lack of readily available ratings is telling, as popular, well-functioning apps typically have numerous reviews.

Digital Tools

You can file claims online through Trawick’s website, which is convenient. There’s also the option to download claim forms and submit claims by email, mail, or fax if you prefer the old-school approach.

Document upload capabilities exist through their online portal. You can access your policy documents digitally, which is standard for modern insurance companies.

The company’s website includes links to travel advisories and resources, which is a nice touch for trip planning.

Trawick Customer Satisfaction & Reputation

Buckle up, because this section is going to be brutal but necessary.

Better Business Bureau (BBB)

Trawick International has a B rating from the BBB and is not BBB accredited. More concerning, 102 complaints have been filed against the business in the past three years.

Looking at the actual complaints on the BBB website paints a consistent picture. The overwhelming majority of complaints relate to claims processing. Customers report:

However, there’s a notable disconnect between industry awards (which may focus on innovation, market presence, and business metrics) and actual customer satisfaction scores. You can be “excellent” from an industry perspective while still frustrating the heck out of your customers.

I’m not going to sugarcoat this: the claims process is Trawick’s biggest weakness, and it’s a massive problem for a company whose entire business model depends on paying claims when customers need help.

Ease of Filing Claims: It’s pretty easy. You can file online, download forms, or call. The initial filing isn’t the problem.

Required Documentation: Here’s where it gets messy. Customers report that SureGo (the third-party claims administrator) requests excessive and redundant documentation. You might send in receipts, medical records, and travel documents, only to be asked for the same things again in a different format. Some customers reported being asked for credit card statements, bank statements, medical records going back months, and travel itineraries with receipts from every single place they stayed.

Average Processing Time: Based on customer reviews, you’re looking at anywhere from 5 to 9 months for even relatively straightforward claims. Some customers reported waiting over a year. This is absolutely unacceptable in an industry where competitors process claims in 2-4 weeks.

Claims Approval Rate: This data isn’t publicly available, but given the volume of complaints about denied claims, Trawick (through SureGo) appears to look for reasons to deny claims rather than approve them.

Customer Feedback on Claims Experience: Overwhelmingly negative. Words like “nightmare,” “unacceptable,” “fraudulent,” and “awful” appear repeatedly. Multiple customers mentioned they would never use Trawick again, specifically because of the claims experience.

Payment Methods and Speed: When claims are finally approved, payment appears to be via check mailed to your address. However, there are reports of checks getting “lost in the mail” and investigations into tracking checks taking additional months.

The fundamental issue is the outsourced model. When you buy a policy from Trawick, but SureGo handles your claim, and Trawick tells you they’re not responsible for how SureGo handles things, you’re stuck in customer service hell. You have no leverage, no escalation path, and no accountability.

But if you need to file a claim, you’re in for a months-long ordeal that will test your patience and persistence.

You should consider Trawick if:

  • You’re buying travel insurance mainly for peace of mind and don’t anticipate actually using it
  • You’re comfortable with the risk that if something does go wrong, you might wait 6-9 months for reimbursement

You should absolutely look elsewhere if:

The bottom line is this: travel insurance exists for when things go wrong. If the insurance company makes things even worse when you’re already dealing with a cancelled trip, medical emergency, or lost luggage, then what’s the point? Trawick’s competitive pricing might save you $50-100 upfront, but if you end up fighting for nine months to get an $800 reimbursement, you haven’t saved anything except money.

If you’re genuinely buying insurance to check a box and feel better about your trip, and you’re the type of person who rarely has problems while traveling, then Trawick’s low prices might work for you. But if there’s any chance you’ll actually need to use this insurance, I’d recommend spending a bit more with a company that has a track record of actually taking care of customers when they need it most.

Travel insurance should reduce your stress, not add to it. Based on the weight of evidence from customer reviews, Trawick International too often adds stress at the worst possible time. That’s ultimately why I can’t give them a strong recommendation despite some genuine positives in their coverage options and pricing.
